The Mangyan people are comprised of eight distinct Indigenous groups inhabiting the island of Mindoro, Philippines. Each group possesses its unique cultural identity, language, and customs. With a population estimated around 280,001, accurate statistics remain elusive due to remote living conditions and limited external interactions.
Traditionally, Mangyans reside in secluded highland river areas, periodically venturing into lowland regions for trade. Their primary means of sustenance include farming, gathering fruits, and hunting.
Notably, the Hanunó'o subgroup, residing in Southern Mindoro, takes pride in their name, meaning "true," "pure," or "genuine." This term reflects their commitment to preserving ancestral traditions and practices - Josette
